Epilepsy, also known as seizure, is a brain disorder. It results when there is a disruption in the brain’s electrical signals.
Sometimes, a seizure is hardly noticeable. The person concerned may feel he is being pricked briefly with pins and needles in one thumb. But serious seizures are quite scary. They render the person unconscious, and he falls to the floor, at the same time jerking violently.
My first encounter with an epileptic person was in my hometown several years ago. He was a boy older than I, and he lived in our neighborhood. Whenever he got an attack, his mouth frothed and his whole body trembled. If he was walking or standing, he would just drop to the ground. We kids stayed away from him because we were told that his “disease” was contagious especially if we accidentally touched his saliva. Besides, he really presented a repulsive sight. Some people thought — wrongly —that he was suffering from a mental illness and that he was dangerous. Read the rest of this entry »

Lately, I have heard and read that eating microwaved food is hazardous to your health. I have wondered if that is because of the proliferation of unhealthy, made-to-be-microwaved, processed foods, or if the microwave chemically alters food, rendering it unhealthy, no matter how healthy it is to begin with. I am concerned about this because I often microwave home-cooked leftovers for lunch at work. I guess this issue still on grey area of uncertainity.

There is a lot of talk about green living, organic and raw foods, but most info is so basic that everyone just keeps repeating the stuff already known. Can anyone suggest a place with more advanced and very specific articles stating the facts with references back to the primary sources?

The fat child is likely to become the fat adult and, in turn, have overweight offspring. Extra pounds carried around childhood, unfortunately, reflect poor eating habits that are deeply embedded in a person’s way of life.
There are three primary causes of obesity: genetic — (overeating because of heredity); traumatic (an injury to some part of the body’s metabolic process); and environmental (the availability of food, nature of diet and extent of physical exercise). The third is far and away the dominant cause. When overeating seems to stem from emotional disturbances, it is hard to say with certainty which of the three is the cause. It can be any or all. The regrettable fact is that, whatever the reason, overindulgence in fattening foods can be, and usually is, carried into the adult life. Extra weight becomes an economic, aesthetic and psychological burden; dangerously invites poor emotional health, social unpopularity and poor work at school or at work. These problems, and the pounds that generated them, are more difficult to rout out when they are rooted in the early years, then continued, indiscriminately, into adulthood.
